Microsoft really needs to up their ante. Windows Phone 8.1 is super-amazing and I reckon, with Windows 10 for Mobile, one could easily call their device a desktop-replacement.
The problem, however, lies not in the stars, but with Microsoft policies.
One could argue there are/have been powerful mobile devices (mostly running Google Android or some variant of AOSP), and many of them are capable of running WP 8.1 and Win10 for Mobile, so why only make OSes for OEM-phones and not make it available for everyone?
I mean, there are millions of Android users and now that Microsoft has proven that a closed-OS is better than using an open-source OS (someone please shout BlackPhone..!!), why not take it a step further and offer paid services to install Win10 on existing/outdated mobile phones that have the hardware to run it?
I'm not a dev, but in this process, Microsoft will be creating a lot of jobs, and a lot of happy customers.
Google updates aren't regular, even their track-record with Nexus and AndroidOne devices have been lackluster (in terms of updates), so much that many are using old devices (and just the Google Play edition ones), and have been kept completely out of future updates.
Agreed, Google rules the market share, but with this strategy, Microsoft could win a lot of users who are simply handling powerful albeit outdated devices.
My proposal is simple: find devices that have the hardware to run Win10 for Mobile and work on a port and expect users to pay for the installation. Even the new policy (forthcoming) of making it free for the first year only) will do.
Oh, I should add: don't forget updates until the hardware can't take it anymore.
Just a suggestion. Either way, Microsoft still would make money.
